3 Ways to Think Like an Artist for Improved Content Marketing

Art can play a part in marketing. And if someone says that it is just to sell the thing, then they’re probably not a good judge of where art can be helpful. Smart marketers don’t believe the excuse of “It’s just marketing” to overt the truth or create crummy work which benefits absolutely zero people. Wise marketers embrace art as essential to what they are doing, as much as tactics and execution are. Here, we at Top Advertising Solutions have provided some observations about how artists work and how anyone can adopt an artistic mindset to improve their own work, especially marketing.

Artists Obsess Over Craft

When writers get together, we invariably end up talking about structure, language, word choice, metaphor, and the Oxford comma. I just used it in that last sentence, and I love it. Expression is key in art but you can’t express thoughts or emotions well until you’ve mastered your medium. As a content marketer, your living is made with words. Research disciplines that teach you how to stitch words together in interesting ways. Poetry, screenwriting, short stories, if you’re being vocal, acting classes or voice lessons. These all keep you learning and mastering your craft. Creative writing is huge to content marketing. The ever-important “show, not tell” rule is especially helpful. You’ll never stop learning and that’s the point.

The Artist’s Productive Time is Sacred

Nearly all talented artists tend to work in well-defined work cycles, no matter their medium. There are specific times of the day set aside for begin productive. This time is sacred and often used for drafting new ideas. Protect this time fiercely and don’t’ let yourself be distracted. Do whatever it takes to just sit down and write. The only way most of us ever manage to get something done is to be a bit robotic about getting down to work. Nonstop creative time needs to get written into your agenda. Defend this time from distractions, including those you are especially guilty of. Hide the phone if you need to.

Embrace Bad Art

Artists know that the way to good art is leads through a valley of a whole bunch of bad art. You’ve got to work through it. Practice, after all, does make perfect, or at least acceptable. You’ll never be able to write well until sit your butt down at your desk and start writing. You can’t learn from mistake you don’t make. Keep working on a piece until it is ready. Keep challenging yourself and you’ll keep getting better. Rewrites and editing are a part of writing, there’s no way around it. You will get better, promise. But you’ll have to keep at it and don’t feel discouraged by the need to consistently edit. That’s part of the process. Let Top Advertising Solutions know what you think in the comments below.
